Judge Julia Dayton Klein - Professional Background & Legal Expertise

Biography

Hon. Julia Dayton Klein is a judge for the 4th Judicial District Court of Minnesota in Hennepin County. She was appointed to the bench by Governor Tim Walz in 2021, filling the vacancy created by the retirement of the Hon. Thomas S. Fraser (Ret.).

Prior to her appointment, Dayton Klein was a partner and trial attorney at Lathrop GPM (2020 to 2021), where she handled matters involving asylum, election and voting rights, employment, food safety and labeling, government investigations, housing, intellectual property, international arbitration, products liability, and regulatory issues. While at the firm, she also served as co-lead of the Women’s Initiative Network and sat on its Culture, Diversity, and Inclusion Committee.

Before her practice there, Dayton Klein was a partner at Gray Plant Mooty (2016 to 2020); general counsel for the Minnesota Department of Commerce (2014 to 2016); and an associate at Robins, Kaplan Miller & Ciresi (2006 to 2013) and Moss & Barnett (2004 to 2006).

Dayton Klein received a B.A. in finance and business economics with a concentration in the Hesburgh Program of Public Service from the University of Notre Dame in 1999. She went on to complete a J.D. at the University of Notre Dame Law School in 2002.

After graduating from law school, Dayton Klein began her legal career as a judicial law clerk to the Hon. Charles A. Porter, Jr. with the 4th Judicial District Court (2002 to 2004).

She has been involved as a volunteer for The Advocates for Human Rights, the Volunteer Lawyers Network, Kenwood Elementary School, and the North Community Herald Meslie YMCA. Dayton Klein sat as a board member of Friends of the Hennepin County Library and Women Winning.

She also assisted children with distance learning and volunteered her time with voter rights organizations.
