Judge Joy Malek Oldfield: Professional Background and Legal Expertise

Biography

The Hon. Joy Malek Oldfield is a judge for the General Division of the Summit County Court of Common Pleas in Ohio. She was elected to the bench on November 8, 2016.

Oldfield presides over felony criminal matters and civil disputes. She also operates the Turning Point Program (Felony Drug Court), an addiction recovery program for felony offenders. She is also the founder of Faith in Recovery and Y-STRONG, two programs designed to provide participants with spiritual and physical wellness services.

Prior to her election, Oldfield sat as a judge for the Akron Municipal Court, a position to which she was elected in 2011. During her tenure there, she served as the Presiding Judge of the Akron Recovery Court (2013 to 2016).

Oldfield earned a bachelor’s degree in sociology from John Carroll University in 1997. She then completed a J.D. at the University of Akron School of Law in 2000.

After graduating from law school, Oldfield entered into private practice. She worked as an associate at Scanlon & Gearinger Co. Then, in 2007, she became a partner at Hill Hardman Oldfield. She worked in that capacity until her election to the bench, handling complex civil litigation and appeals.

Her memberships have included the Akron Bar Foundation and the Akron Bar Association as well as the Women’s Endowment Fund of the Akron Community Foundation Advisory Board, the Summit County Criminal Justice Advisory Board, and the Oriana House Advisory Committee. She also sat on the Board of Trustees of Akron’s Community Legal Aid Services and the Women’s Network of Northeast Ohio.

She is a recipient of the Distinguished Service Award from the Ohio Association for Justice (2007), the Committed to the Cause of Justice Award from Mothers on a Mission Akron Chapter (2020), the Juanita Shepherd Service Award from Providence Baptist Church (2020), the Road to Recovery Award from the County of Summit Intercession for Dependency (2018), and the Courage to Change Award from Freedom House for Women (2017).
