Biography

The Hon. Joseph V. McNamara is a judge for the General Division of the Lucas County Court of Common Pleas in Ohio. He was elected to the bench on November 6, 2018.

Prior to his election, McNamara was an assistant law director for the City of Toledo Law Department, a position he held since 2015. Before that, he was an attorney in private practice, representing clients in both civil and criminal matters.

McNamara earned a bachelor’s degree in English from the University of Michigan in 1999. He then completed a J.D. at New York University School of Law in 2003.

His memberships have included the Toledo City Council (2006 to 2013). He drafted and helped pass the Energy Special Improvement District Ordinance, the anti-human trafficking ordinance, and an ordinance to decrease the cost of public records requests.

A resident of Toledo, McNamara attends Christ the King Catholic Church. He is married with three dogs (Honey, Bit, and Walter) and is also a licensed foster parent.

McNamara is registered as a Democrat.
