Judge Joseph P. Spinola: Professional Background and Legal Expertise

Biography

The Hon. Joseph P. Spinola (Ret.) served as a justice on the Nassau County Supreme Court in the 10th Judicial District of New York. Spinola was elected to the bench on November 4, 2003. He retired in 2010 and joined Resolute Systems as a mediator and arbitrator.

Prior to his election, Spinola was a judge on the Nassau County District Court, a position to which he was seated in 2003. Before that, he spent time as a partner at Spinola & Mirotznik (1997 to 2002) as well as a trial attorney for Joachim, Flanzig, Frommer & Madigan (1995 to 1997), Thurm & Heller (1993 to 1995), and Nationwide Insurance Company (1988 to 1993). Over the course of his legal career, Spinola specialized in personal injury trials, representing clients in negligence, assault, libel and slander, products liability, and wrongful death cases.

Spinola earned a B.A. in history and philosophy from Hofstra University in 1980. He then completed a J.D. at Hofstra University, Maurice A. Deane School of Law, in 1983.

After graduating from law school, Spinola began his legal career as a law clerk at Curtis, Hart & Zaklukiewicz. He worked in that capacity for one year, eventually leaving to become an associate at Rivkin, Radler, Dunne & Bayh (1985 to 1986) and the Law Office of Robert I. Fiedelman (1986 to 1987).

His memberships have included the American Bar Association, the New York State Bar Association, the New York County Bar Association, the Brooklyn Bar Association, the Suffolk County Bar Association, the New York State Trial Lawyers’ Association, the National Institute for Trial Advocacy, the Nassau-Suffolk Trial Lawyers Association, the Council on Litigation Management, and the National Academy of Distinguished Neutrals.

He is a recipient of the Man of the Year Award from the Long Beach Lawyers Association (2007).

Raised in East Meadow, New York, Spinola is the son of Salvatore Spinola, a former police officer for the New York Police Department who passed away in the line of duty when he was eleven years old.

He is registered as a Republican.
