Judge Jose M. Gonzalez: Professional Background and Legal Expertise

Biography

The Hon. Jose M. Gonzalez (Ret.) was an associate judge for the 65th District Court in El Paso County, Texas. He was appointed to the District Court in 2016.

During his judicial tenure, Gonzalez presided over the Family Violence Court.

He received a bachelor’s degree from the University of Texas at El Paso. Gonzalez went on to complete a J.D. at the University of Texas School of Law in 1988.

He was with the El Paso County Attorney’s Office for eleven years prior to joining the bench. During his tenure there, Gonzalez served as a prosecutor and supervisor of the Family Justice Division and also served as a first assistant county attorney. His legal career also included working for twelve years as a family and criminal law private practice attorney and as a former assistant attorney general, where he held an assignment in the Consumer Protective Division.

After leaving the bench, Gonzalez was elected to serve as senior division chief of the Protective Services Division with the El Paso County Attorney's Office in 2020. In this role, he was tasked with overseeing the Protective Orders, Child Protective Services, and Communication Units as well as the County Attorney’s Annex Offices.

His memberships have included the Criminal Justice Advisory Committee for the Rio Grande Council of Governments (chairman), the Texas Youth Commission Volunteer Service Board (chairman), the El Paso County Civil E-File Committee (chairman), and the El Paso Children’s Advocacy Center (vice president of the Founding Board).

Gonzalez also served as a member of the Family Services El Paso Board and the City’s Foster Grandparent Board.
