Judge John P. Colangelo: Professional Background and Legal Expertise

Biography

The Hon. John P. Colangelo (Ret.) served as an associate justice of the 3rd Judicial Department of the Appellate Division of the Supreme Court of the State of New York. He was appointed to the bench on November 6, 2019.


Prior to his appointment, Colangelo was a justice on the Westchester County Supreme Court, a position to which he was elected in 2013. Before that, he spent time as a judge on the Westchester County Court (2010 to 2013) and the New Rochelle City Court (2002 to 2009) as well as a partner at Colangelo & Goldenberg (1997 to 2002).


Colangelo earned an A.B. in American history from Brown University in 1974. He then completed a J.D. at New York University School of Law in 1977. He is licensed to practice in New York (1978), the District of Columbia (1979), and New Jersey (1987),


After graduating from law school, Colangelo began his legal career as an associate at Kaye, Scholer, Fierman, Hays & Handler. He remained with the firm until 1987, at which time he joined Fabricant, Yeskoo & Colangelo. Then, in 1994, he moved to Wilner & Associates before opening his own private practice as a sole practitioner the following year.


His memberships have included the New Rochelle Bar Association, the Westchester County Bar Association, and the Association of the Bar of the City of New York. He has also been involved with the American Arbitration Association Panel of Arbitrators, the New Rochelle Library Foundation, the New Rochelle Municipal Housing Authority, and the Columbus Citizens Foundation, and he has served on the New Rochelle Charter Revision Commission.


He is registered as a Democrat.
