Judge John P. Colangelo - Professional Background & Legal Expertise

Biography

The Hon. John P. Colangelo is a Justice of the Westchester County Supreme Court in the Ninth Judicial District of New York. He was elected to the Supreme Court bench in 2014. At the time of the election, Justice Colangelo had served as a judge for the Westchester County Court since his election to that seat in 2010.

He first joined the Courts in 2002, when he was appointed by the former Mayor of New Rochelle, Mayor Timothy C. Idoni, to serve as a judge for the New Rochelle City Court. The following year, Justice Colangelo was appointed to serve as an interim judge for the Westchester County Court by the Hon. Francis Nicholai, former Administrative Judge for the Ninth Judicial District. He continued to serve as interim judge until being elected to a full-time position in 2010.

Colangelo graduated with his A.B. in American history from Brown University in 1974. He went on to earn his J.D. from New York University School of Law in 1977.

After graduating from law school, Colangelo entered private practice, where he would spend the bulk of his legal career. He first joined the law firm Kaye, Scholer, Fierman, Hays, and Handler, where he practiced as an associate from 1977 to 1987. He then practiced at Fabricant, Yeskoo, and Colangelo until 1994, at which time, he briefly practiced at Wilner and Associates. The following year, Colangelo went into solo practice at his own law firm, where he remained until partnering at Colangelo and Goldenberg LLP in 1997. He was practicing in that capacity at the time of his appointment to the City Court in 2002.

He has also served as an adjunct professor at Iona College since 2006.

Justice Colangelo’s committee memberships have included the Appellate Division, First Department’s Committee on Character and Fitness, he served as chair of the Westchester County Bar Association’s Committee on Federal Practice and Procedure, and as vice-chair of the Association of the Bar of the City of New York’s Committee on State Legislation.

His other memberships have included the New Rochelle Bar Association, the American Arbitration Association Panel of Arbitrators, the New Rochelle Library Foundation, and the Columbus Citizens Foundation. Colangelo also served as co-chair of the New Rochelle Charter Revision Commission and as commissioner and treasurer of the New Rochelle Municipal Housing Authority.
