Biography

Hon. John N. Kirkendall (Ret.) was a judge for the Washtenaw County Probate Court in Michigan. He joined the bench in 1986.

During his judicial tenure, he presided in the Family Division, where he served as Chief Judge.

Prior to beginning his judicial career, Kirkendall was a partner at Kirkendall & Logeman in Ypsilanti (1965 to 1986).

He received a bachelor’s degree in economics from the University of Michigan in 1960. Kirkendall went on to complete a J.D. at the University of Michigan Law School in 1963. He was admitted to practice in Michigan in 1964.

Kirkendall has served as a faculty member of the Institute of Continuing Legal Education, the Michigan Judicial Institute, the National College of Probate Judges, and the National Judicial College.

He was a past president of the National College of Probate Judges and a member of the Advisory Council for the Elder Law Center of the National Center for State Courts, the Advisory Council for Elder Law Issues of the Stetson University College of Law, and the Faculty Advisory Council on Elder Abuse for the National Council of Juvenile and Family Court Judges. Kirkendall has also served on the Advisory Committee for the Michigan Family Law Benchbook.

Kirkendall was born in Burlington, Indiana. In his free time, he has taught cooking classes at various cooking schools in Ann Arbor for over twenty-five years. Kirkendall also attended classes at Cordon Bleu and La Varenne in Paris, as well as schools in New York, New Orleans, and San Francisco.
