Biography

The Hon. John McClellan Marshall (Ret.) served as a judge for the 14th District Court in Dallas County, Texas. Marshall was elected to the bench in 1980. He retired at the conclusion of his term in 2000 and became a judge for the Sabine Valley Child Protection Court.


Over the course of his judicial career, Marshall presided as a judge for the Dallas County Emergency Medical-Legal Project (1986 to 2000). He also held assignments as the Presiding Judge of the District Courts of Dallas County (1983), Presiding Judge of the Civil District Courts (1986), and the Local Administrative District Judge of Dallas County (1990 to 1991).


Marshall earned a B.A. from Virginia Military Institute (1965) and an M.A. from Vanderbilt University (1966). Then, in 1975, he completed a J.D. at Southern Methodist University, Dedman School of Law.


As a law student, Marshall began his legal career as a legal assistant at Norton & Morrison in 1975. The following year, he became a partner at Norton, Morrison & Marshall, where he practiced for the next four years. During this time in private practice, Marshall also served as a judge for the Muenster Municipal Court (1976 to 1980) as well as an advisor on constitutional revision for the Cherokee Nation (1995).


His memberships have included Phi Delta Phi, the Texas Bar Foundation, and the Dallas Bar Foundation.


Marshall was born in Dallas, Texas. He is a sailplane student pilot, a sailboat racer, and a second-degree black belt in tae kwon do.
