Judge John M. Durkin - Professional Background & Legal Expertise

Biography

The Hon. John M. Durkin is a judge for the General Division of the Mahoning County Court of Common Pleas in Ohio. He was initially elected to the bench on November 5, 1996.

Over the course of his judicial career, Durkin has presided over the Mahoning County Felony Drug Court Program. He initiated the program after encountering a number of defendants committing crimes because of addiction.

Durkin earned a bachelor’s degree from the University of Dayton. He then completed a J.D. at the University of Dayton School of Law in 1983.

After graduating from law school, Durkin entered into private practice, handling personal injury, medical malpractice, and criminal matters. During this time, he also served as an assistant prosecutor for the City of Youngstown as well as counsel for the Mahoning County Children Services Board. He worked in these capacities until his election to the bench.

His memberships have included the Ohio State Bar Association, the Mahoning County Bar Association, the Ohio Common Pleas Judges Association, the Ohio Judicial Conference (chair), and the Ohio Judicial College (trustee).

Durkin is a resident of Youngstown, Ohio. He is married with four children and attends St. Luke’s Church.

He is registered as a Democrat.
