Biography

The Hon. John M. Allegretti is a circuit judge on the Circuit Court of Cook County in Illinois. He was elected to the bench on November 4, 2014.

Allegretti has held assignments in the Non-Jury Civil Section of the First Municipal District of the Municipal Department.

Prior to his election, Allegretti spent time as general counsel for the Cook County Treasurer. Before that, he served as general counsel for the Cook County Assessor.

Allegretti earned a B.A. from the University of Illinois in 1991. He then completed a J.D. at St. Thomas University School of Law in 1995. He was licensed to practice in Illinois (1995).

After graduating from law school, Allegretti began his legal career as an attorney in private practice. He represented clients in domestic relations and bankruptcy matters for two years, eventually leaving to become a judicial hearing officer for the Illinois Property Tax Appeal Board. Then, in 2001, he was hired as an assistant state’s attorney for the Cook County State’s Attorney’s Office.

He is registered as a Democrat.
