Judge John A. Zottola - Professional Background & Legal Expertise

Biography

The Hon. John A. Zottola (deceased) served as a judge for the Allegheny County Court of Common Pleas in Pennsylvania. Zottola was elected to the bench in 1993 and subsequently retained in 2013. He passed away on October 12, 2020.

Over the course of his judicial career, Zottola was instrumental in the creation of the Allegheny County Veterans Court Program. He sat as the Supervising Judge of the Mental Health Treatment Court, and he held assignments in the Criminal Division and the Orphan’s Court Division.

Zottola earned a bachelor’s degree in history from the University of Pittsburgh. He then completed a J.D. at the University of Pittsburgh School of Law in 1982.

After graduating from law school, Zottola began his legal career as an assistant district attorney in the Allegheny County District Attorney’s Office. He served in that capacity until 1989, holding assignments in the Crimes Against Persons Unit.

Zottola entered into private practice in 1989. He worked as an associate at Robb, Leonard & Mulvihill, specializing in civil defense matters. He held this position until his election to the bench.

His memberships included the Pittsburgh Zoning Board (1990 to 1993) and the Pittsburgh Planning Committee (1990 to 1993).

Born and raised in Highland Park and Stanton Heights, Zottola attended Central Catholic High School.
