Biography

The Hon. Joel P. Fahnestock is a judge for the 16th Judicial Circuit Court of Missouri. She was appointed to the bench by former Governor Matt Blunt on January 6, 2009.

Fahnestock has held assignments on the Missouri Court Automation Committee, the Implementation Planning Task Team, the Trial Judge’s Focus Group, and the Case Management Oversight Team.

Prior to her appointment, Fahnestock was an Assistant United States Attorney in the Civil Division of the Office of the United States Attorney for the Western District of Missouri. Before that, she spent nine months as an assistant prosecuting attorney in the Drug Unit of the Jackson County Prosecutor’s Office.

Fahnestock earned a bachelor’s degree from William Woods College. She then completed a J.D. at the University of Missouri-Kansas City School of Law in 1994. As a law student, she sat as the Notes Editor for the UMKC Law Review.

After graduating from law school, Fahnestock began her legal career as a law clerk to the Hon. Scott O. Wright of the United States District Court for the Western District of Missouri. She then entered into private practice, working as an attorney at Rouse, Hendricks, German, May & Shank and Shank, Laue & Hamilton.

Her memberships have included the Association of Circuit Court Judges, the Kansas City Metropolitan Bar Association, and the Ross T. Roberts American Inns of Court.
