Biography

The Hon. Joan E. DuBuque (deceased) served as a judge for the King County Superior Court in Washington. DuBuque was appointed to the bench by former Governor Booth Gardener in 1989. She retired in 2014.

Over the course of her judicial career, DuBuque held an assignment as Chief Judge of the Unified Family Court. She was also the regional co-chair of the DV/CPS Child Maltreatment effort, which created the Domestic Violence and Child Maltreatment Coordinated Response Guideline.

Prior to her appointment, DuBuque spent five years as a family law commissioner for the King County Superior Court.

DuBuque earned a bachelor’s degree in political science from the University of Washington in 1974. She then completed a J.D. at the University of Puget Sound School of Law in 1977.

After graduating from law school, DuBuque began her legal career in the King County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office, where she served as an assistant deputy prosecuting attorney. She handled interstate child support enforcement, non-support, and paternity cases.

She then entered into private practice in 1979, handling domestic relations, personal injury, real property, and small-business matters. During this time, DuBuque also participated in the Country Doctor Volunteer Lawyers Clinic and the Northwest Women’s Law Center.

She was named Judge of the Year by Washington Women Lawyers (2003). She was also a recipient of the Champion of Justice Award from the Washington State Bar Association (2005).

DuBuque was born and raised in West Seattle, where she attended Holy Rosary. She passed away on July 24, 2017.
