Judge Jill D. Dorancy - Professional Background & Legal Expertise

Biography

The Hon. Jill D. Dorancy is a judge for the 2nd Judicial District Court of Colorado. She was appointed to the bench by Governor Jared Polis on July 1, 2020, filling a vacancy created by the resignation of the Hon. Elizabeth Starrs.

The 2nd Judicial District encompasses Denver County.

Prior to her appointment, Dorancy was senior counsel at Jost Energy Law, a law firm she joined in 2017. In that capacity, she represented companies before the Colorado Oil and Gas Conservation Commission in drilling and spacing unit applications, pooling applications, and enforcement cases. She also represented companies in farm-out/farm-in agreements, surface use agreements, and oil and gas leases, and she advised clients with local permitting, transportation, and road access issues. Before that, Dorancy spent time as a hearings officer for the Colorado Oil and Gas Conservation Commission (2012 to 2017).

Dorancy earned a bachelor’s degree in English and philosophy from the State University of New York at Binghamton in 1995. She then completed a J.D. at the University of New Mexico School of Law in 1998.

After graduating from law school, Dorancy began her legal career as a judicial law clerk to the Hon. Gregory Kellam Scott of the Colorado Supreme Court. She served in that capacity until 2000, at which time she entered into private practice at Ireland Stapleton Pryor Pascoe. During her tenure there, she handled construction and employment law matters, eventually leaving to become a partner at Cooper & Dorancy in 2001.
