Biography

Hon. Jennifer L. Branch is a judge for the Hamilton County Court of Common Pleas (General Division) in Ohio. She was elected to the bench on November 3, 2020.

Branch received a bachelor’s degree in politics from New York University in 1984. She went on to complete a J.D. at Case Western University School of Law in 1987.

After graduating from law school, Branch began her legal career as an attorney with the Legal Aid Society of Cincinnati. She later joined the law firm of Gerhardstein & Branch Co., LPA as an associate in 1997. At the time of her election, Branch was a partner in the firm.

During her time there, her practice focused on race, sex, disability, sexual orientation, gender identity discrimination, employment discrimination, police misconduct, prisoner civil rights, and reproductive rights. In 2015, the firm won a landmark U.S. Supreme Court ruling (Obergefell v. Hodges) stipulating that the Constitution requires states to license and recognize marriages between same-sex couples. She also gained experience in bench trials, jury trials, and administrative hearings in state and federal court and argued appeals in the Ohio Court of Appeals, the Ohio Supreme Court, and the United States Sixth Circuit Court of Appeals.

After being elected, Branch hoped to increase diversity by enlarging Hamilton County’s jury pool and to address sentencing disparities to ensure consistency in convictions of the same crime.

She is registered as a Democrat.
