Biography

The Hon. Jay C. Sheffield is a justice of the peace for the Lincoln County Justice Court in Montana. He was appointed to the bench by the Lincoln Board of County Commissioners in 2009.

The Justice Court is a court of limited jurisdiction in Montana, hearing cases involving misdemeanor offenses, civil cases up to $12,000, small claims up to $7,000, landlord/tenant disputes, local ordinances, forcible entry and detainer, protection orders, and some juvenile matters.

Sheffield also presides as the city judge for the City of Libby.

Before beginning his judicial tenure, he worked for thirty years in law enforcement. He began as a deputy with the San Diego County Sheriff’s Department in California in 1979. Then, after his retirement in 2004, he relocated to Libby, Montana, but continued to commute back to San Diego to work on a part-time basis. Sheffield later accepted a temporary deputy’s position with the Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office in 2007, working as a patrol deputy until transitioning into a new position as a civil/transport deputy in 2008.

He and his wife, Kathleen, have one son.
