Judge Janeice T. Martin - Professional Background & Legal Expertise

Biography

The Hon. Janeice T. Martin is a judge for the Collier County Court in the 20th Judicial Circuit of Florida. She was elected to the bench in 2008.

Martin has presided over county civil, small claims, and evictions. She has also served on the Collier County Adult Drug Court.

Prior to her election, she worked as an attorney at Berry & Day. During her ten-year tenure with the firm, which later became Berry, Day, McFee & Martin, she handled criminal defense matters, including cases ranging from speeding tickets to first-degree murder cases involving the death penalty. Martin was named a partner in the firm in 2003.

She received a bachelor’s degree from Duke University in 1993. Martin went on to complete a J.D. at the University of Florida, Fredric G. Levin College of Law, in 1996. She was admitted to practice in Florida (1996) and the United States District Court for the Middle District of Florida (1997).

After graduating from law school, Martin began her legal career as an assistant state attorney with the Office of the State Attorney for the 20th Judicial Circuit.

Martin is a past president of the Collier County Bar Association. She has also been involved with the Florida Judicial College and the Florida Supreme Court Steering Committee on Problem Solving Courts.

She is the recipient of the inaugural Janeice T. Martin Equal Justice Award from the Legal Aid Service of Collier County (2008), which was named in her honor, and The Florida Bar President’s Pro Bono Service Award (2006). Martin was also named Woman Lawyer of the Year by the Collier County Association of Woman Lawyers (2007) and Mental Health Advocate of the Year by NAMI of Collier County and the David Law Center.

Martin is a lifelong resident of Collier County and attended St. Ann School and St. John Neumann High School. At the time of her investiture, she was sworn in by her father, the Hon. Lawrence Martin (Ret.), a former judge for the 20th Judicial Circuit Court. He retired from the bench in 2010.
