Biography

The Hon. James T. Latting is a judge for the Riverside County Superior Court in California. He was appointed to the bench by former Governor Jerry Brown in 2014. He filled the vacancy created by the retirement of the Hon. Gary B. Tranbarger (Ret.).

He is a registered Democrat.

Judge Latting received his B.A. from Yale University. He also received an MSc from the London School of Economics. He went on to earn his J.D. from the University of Oklahoma College of Law.

After law school, Latting would work in the private sector for thirty-six years. During that time he served as an associate at Crowe and Dunlevy from 1978 to 1979, and at Bogle and Gates from 1979 to 1981 and again from 1988 to 1990. He also partnered at Bratcher, Owen, Latting, Teague, and Owen from 1981 to 1984, and with George, Hull, Porter, and Kohli P.S. from 1990 to 1996. Latting served two stints as managing partner and general counsel at Latting and Co. before ultimately joining Roemer and Harnik LLP as of counsel in 2002. He would remain with Roemer and Harnik until his appointment to the Superior Court in 2014.

While on the bench, Judge Latting has presided over a criminal trials calendar at the Larson Justice Center.

His memberships have included the Warren Slaughter/Richard Roemer Inns of Court and the past-president of the Family YMCA of the Desert.

Judge Latting hails from Oklahoma. His mother, the late Patience Sewell Latting, served as the Mayor of Oklahoma City from 1971 to 1983 and held the distinction of being the first female mayor to serve for the city.

In his free time, Judge Latting enjoys playing tennis and going on safari in Africa.
