Biography

The Hon. James R. Stearns is a judge for the 6th Judicial Circuit Court of Florida. Stearns was elected to the bench in 2014. He filled the vacancy created by the retirement of the Hon. R. Timothy Peters.


The 6th Judicial Circuit encompasses Pasco County and Pinellas County. Stearns has held assignments in both counties, presiding over cases in the Civil, Probate, Family, and Juvenile Divisions.


Prior to his election, Stearns was an attorney in private practice, handling family law, traffic, and criminal cases. Before that, he worked as an assistant public defender with the Office of the Public Defender for the 6th Judicial Circuit for three years.


Stearns received his B.A. from the University of Florida in 1978. He went on to earn a J.D. from Stetson University College of Law in 1981.
