The Hon. James R. (Reg) Reilly is a judge for the Alameda County Superior Court in California. He was appointed to the bench in 2018 by former governor Jerry Brown. He filled the vacancy created by the retirement of the Hon. Robert B. Freedman (Ret.).
He is registered without party preference.
Judge Reilly graduated with his B.A. in economics from the University of California, Berkeley in 1976. He went on to earn his J.D. from the University of San Francisco School of Law in 1986.
Reilly was an officer in the U.S. Navy from 1976 to 1983, where he served in the Third and Seventh Fleets.
He began his legal career as an associate at the law firm of Pillsbury, Madison, and Sutro, where he practiced from 1986 to 1990. He would then join Gordon Rees Scully Mansukhani LLP in 1992, where he would serve as a partner until his appointment to the Superior Court in 2018. During his twenty-seven year tenure there, Reilly practiced general commercial and product liability litigation which included the defense of medical device and pharmaceutical product manufacturers. On the commercial side, Reilly helped litigate matters involving securities fraud, theft of trade secrets, antitrust and breach of contract.
Reilly has also served as a judge pro tem for the San Francisco County Superior Court.
While on the bench, Judge Reilly has presided over a general criminal calendar at the Wiley W. Manuel Courthouse.
