Judge James P. McClusky: Professional Background and Legal Expertise

Biography

The Hon. James P. McClusky is a justice on the Jefferson County Supreme Court in the 5th Judicial District of New York. McClusky was elected to the Supreme Court bench in 2011.

The 5th Judicial District includes Herkimer, Jefferson, Lewis, Oneida, Onondaga, and Oswego counties.

While on the Supreme Court, McClusky was promptly appointed by Chief Administrative Judge A. Gail Prudenti to serve as supervising judge of the Justice Courts in the 5th Judicial District in 2012.

Prior to his election to the bench, he worked in private practice at McClusky Law Firm LLC, a law practice he joined in 1989. McClusky was named a managing partner in the firm in 2004.

During that time, McClusky supplemented his practice as a Lewis County Conflict Defender (2006 to 2011), a supervising judge for the Town of Watertown (2002 to 2011), and as an assistant public defender with the Office of the Jefferson County Public Defender (1989 to 1990).

McClusky received a B.A. from Hartwick College in 1985. He then completed a J.D. at the University at Buffalo School of Law in 1988.

McClusky was admitted to practice in New Jersey (1988) and New York (1989).

His memberships have included the Jefferson County Women’s Bar Association, the Lewis County Bar Association, and the Jefferson County Bar Association. He is a past president of the board of the CREDO Community Center for the Treatment of Addictions and a board member of the Disabled Persons Action Organization.

McClusky and his wife, Joanne, have raised five children.

He is a registered Republican.
