Biography

The Hon. James J. Ferrelli is a judge for the Vicinage 3 Superior Court in Burlington County in New Jersey. He was appointed to the bench by former Governor Chris Christie in 2017.

Ferrelli has held assignments in the Family Division (2018 to 2020) and the Civil Division (2020 to present) in Burlington County.

At the time of his appointment, he was a partner in the trial department at Duane Morris LLP, a position to which he was named in 1991. During his tenure there, he represented clients in complex business and commercial litigation, handling corporate, product liability, mass tort, and class action matters for individuals, government entities, and public and private companies. Before that, he was an associate at Pepper Hamilton LLP (1984 to 1991).

He received a bachelor’s degree in political science and economics from Boston College in 1981. Ferrelli went on to complete a J.D. at New York University School of Law in 1984.

He is a past president of the Burlington County Bar Association and a former trustee of the New Jersey State Bar Association. In addition, he served on the editorial board of the New Jersey Lawyer magazine, and he spent several years as outside legal counsel for the Otho Davis Scholarship Foundation (1999 to 2018).

From a civic standpoint, he was second vice president and director of the Flyers Youth Hockey Club, a non-profit travel ice hockey club. A certified level 5 USA hockey coach, Ferrelli has coached boys’ travel ice hockey for both the Flyers Youth Hockey Club and Medford Wild Hockey Club.

Raised in Mount Holly, New Jersey, Ferrelli attended Rancocas Valley Regional High School. His late father, the Hon. Dominick J. Ferrelli, also served as a judge for the Burlington County Superior Court, having retired in 1990.
