Judge James F. Stevenson: Professional Background and Legal Expertise

Biography

The Hon. James F. Stevenson is a judge for the General Division of the Shelby County Court of Common Pleas in Ohio. He was elected to the bench on November 7, 2006.

Stevenson has held assignments on the Civil Law and Procedure Committee, the Court Technology Committee, and the Jury Service Committee of the Ohio Judicial Conference. He also sat on the Ohio Supreme Court’s Commission on Technology and the Courts.

Prior to his election, Stevenson was the County Prosecutor for the Shelby County Prosecutor’s Office, a position he held since 1992. Before that, he spent eleven years as the Chief Felony Prosecutor for Shelby County (1981 to 1992).

Stevenson earned a bachelor’s degree from the Ohio State University in 1972. He then completed a J.D. at the University of Cincinnati College of Law in 1975.

After graduating from law school, Stevenson began his legal career as an assistant public defender for the Shelby County Public Defender’s Office (1975 to 1981). During this time, Stevenson was also an associate at Boller & Shuffelton, a partner at Boller & Stevenson, and a partner at Kerrigan, Boller, Stevenson, Goettemoeller & Beigel (1975 to 2005). His private practice work encompassed bankruptcy, corporate and business, divorce and family law, estate planning, real estate, and general trial practice matters.

His memberships have included the Shelby County Bar Association, the Ohio State Bar Association, and the American Bar Association.

He is a recipient of the Outstanding Career Service Award from the Shelby County Bar Association.

Born in Bellefontaine, Ohio, Stevenson currently resides in Sidney with his wife, Gwen, who works as Dean of Edison Community College. When not presiding over legal matters, he enjoys bicycling, gardening, and golfing.
