Judge James B. Hancock: Professional Background and Legal Expertise

Biography

The Hon. James B. Hancock is a judge for the Floyd County Superior Court in Indiana. He was elected to the bench on November 4, 2014.

Prior to his election, Hancock was a partner at Hancock & Hancock, a law firm he joined in 1979. During his tenure there, he specialized in civil litigation matters, supplementing his practice with service as an attorney for the City of New Albany Plan Commission (2000 to 2004), the Greenville Township Fireboard (1998 to 2001), and the Southern Indiana Home Builders Association (1997 to 2000).

Hancock earned a bachelor’s degree in political science from Purdue University in 1973. He then completed a J.D. at the University of Illinois Chicago School of Law in 1979.

After graduating from law school, Hancock began his legal career as a public defender for the Floyd County Circuit Court (1979 to 1982) and the Floyd County Superior Court (1985 to 1991).

His memberships have included the Floyd County Bar Association, the Indiana State Bar Association, and the American Bar Association.

Raised in Floyd County, Hancock attended New Albany High School.

He is registered as a Republican.
