Judge J. Robert McCoy: Professional Background and Legal Expertise

The Hon. J. Robert McCoy is a judge for the Tarrant County Criminal Court No. 3 in Texas. He was elected to the bench on November 4, 2014.

Prior to his election, McCoy was a judge for the Texas Second District Court of Appeals, a position to which he was named by former Governor Rick Perry in 2003. Before that, he presided over the 48th District Court in Tarrant County (1995 to 2003).

McCoy earned a bachelor’s degree in engineering physics and a master’s degree in mathematics from Texas Tech University. He then completed a J.D. at the University of Houston Law Center in 1982.

After graduating from law school, McCoy began his legal career as a briefing attorney for the Supreme Court of Texas. He served in that capacity until 1983, at which time he entered into private practice at Shannon Gracey Ratliff & Miller in Fort Worth.

He is registered as a Republican.
