Judge J. Emmett Murphy: Professional Background and Legal Expertise

Biography

The Hon. J. Emmett Murphy (Ret.) was a justice for the Westchester County Supreme Court in the Ninth Judicial District of New York. He was elected to the Supreme Court in 1997 and retained in subsequent elections. He retired in 2017.


He started his judicial career in 1980 when he began an eleven-year tenure as a Yonkers City Court judge. While on the City Court bench, he served as its supervising judge from 1987 to 1991. Murphy was later elected to serve as a judge for the Westchester County Court in 1992. He remained on the County Court until being elected to the Supreme Court in 1997.


Before joining the bench, he worked as a first deputy corporation counsel for the Yonkers Law Department.


Murphy received a B.A. from Manhattan College in 1963. He went on to earn a J.D. from Fordham University School of Law in 1966.
