Judge J. Channing Bennett - Professional Background & Legal Expertise

Biography

Hon. J. Channing Bennett is a judge for the 3rd Judicial District Circuit Court of Oregon in Marion County. He was appointed to the bench by former Governor Kate Brown in 2016, filling the vacancy created by the retirement of the Hon. Jamese Rhoades (Ret.).

Prior to his appointment, Bennett presided for three years as a full-time (2013 to 2016) and volunteer (2010 to 2013) judge pro tem in Marion County. He was also a shareholder at Garrett Hemann Robertson, PC in Salem (2007 to 2013). Bennett joined the firm as an associate in 2003.

Before that, he worked as an associate in Boston, Massachusetts, at Barron & Stadfeld, PC (1999 to 2002) and Berluti & McLaughlin, LLC (1997 to 1999). Bennett entered private practice after serving as in-house counsel in the Law Department at Clean Harbors Environmental Services, Inc. in Braintree (1996 to 1997). His areas of practice included civil litigation with a focus on employment, business, and civil rights.

Bennett received an A.A. in culinary arts (1987) and a B.A. in food service management (1989) from Johnson & Wales University and a B.A. in political science and East Asian studies from the University of Arizona (1994). He went on to complete a J.D. at Boston College Law School in 1997. While a law student, Bennett was a student prosecutor with the Middlesex County District Attorney’s Office in Massachusetts (1997).

He was admitted to practice in Massachusetts (1997), the United States District Court for the District of Massachusetts (1998), Oregon (2002), the United States District Court for the District of Oregon (2002), and the United States Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit (2003).

His memberships have included the Oregon Women Lawyers, the Willamette Valley Inns of Court, and the Marion County Bar Association.

At the time of his appointment, Bennett resided in Dayton, Oregon. Prior to pursuing his legal career, he worked as a chef.
