The Hon. J. Alan Goodwin is a judge for the Pima County Superior Court in Arizona. He was appointed to the bench by Governor Doug Ducey on February 11, 2020, filling a vacancy created by the retirement of the Hon. Charles V. Harrington.
Prior to his appointment, Goodwin was the Chief of the Special Victims Bureau of the Pima County Attorney’s Office, a position he held since 2012. He led the prosecution of child homicide, child physical and sexual abuse, and internet crimes against children as well as sex trafficking, sexual assault, and domestic violence cases. Before that, he spent time as a sole practitioner in his own private practice (2009 to 2012).
Goodwin earned a bachelor’s degree in history and political science from the University of Alabama in 1995. He then completed a J.D. at the University of Alabama School of Law in 1998.
After graduating from law school, Goodwin began his legal career as a judge advocate for the United States Air Force. He served in that capacity until 2004, at which time he became an assistant district attorney for the Criminal Division of the State of Alaska Department of Law.
His memberships have included the Arizona Sexual Assault Evidence Collection Kit Task Force and the Statewide Sexual Assault Response Stakeholder Workgroup.
He was named Felony Prosecutor of the Year by the Arizona Prosecuting Attorneys Advisory Council (2016). He is also a recipient of the Criminal Justice Award from the State Bar of Arizona.
Retiring as a captain from the United States Air Force, Goodwin has attained the rank of colonel in the United States Air Force Reserve, where he trains judge advocates in investigation and litigation techniques and advises commanders on legal issues. He was named United States Air Force European Reserve Judge Advocate of the Year (2009, 2011).
