Biography

The Hon. Ian B. English is a judge for the General Division of the Lucas County Court of Common Pleas in Ohio. He was initially elected to the bench on November 4, 2014, filling a vacancy created by the retirement of the Hon. Frederick McDonald.

Over the course of his judicial career, English has presided over the Lucas County Adult Drug Court. He also sat on the Commission on Specialized Docks of the Ohio Supreme Court.

English earned a bachelor’s degree from the University of Toledo in 1997. He then completed a J.D. at the University of Toledo College of Law in 2000. As a law student, English served as a civil bailiff for the Lucas County Court of Common Pleas.

After graduating from law school, English entered into private practice. Then, the following year, he joined the Lucas County Prosecutor’s Office as an assistant prosecuting attorney. He worked in that capacity until his election to the bench.

English is a life-long resident of Toledo and married to Vallie Bowman-English, the Toledo Municipal Clerk of Courts. The youngest of seven children, his father worked as a toll collector for the Ohio Turnpike. English attended Macomber-Whitney High School, where he studied auto mechanics before working at a local auto-parts store. At that time, he was charged with loitering while eating fast food in a parked car. This event propelled him to pursue a legal career.

He is registered as a Democrat.
