Biography

The Hon. Hyman I. Riebman (Ret.) served as an associate judge on the Circuit Court of Cook County in Illinois. Riebman was appointed to the bench in 2001. He retired on July 6, 2018, returning to private practice as a partner at Grund & Leavitt.

While on the bench, his assignments included the Domestic Relations Division.

Riebman earned a B.A. from DePaul University in 1975. He then completed a J.D. at Northern Illinois University College of Law in 1978. He was admitted to practice in Illinois (1978).

After graduating from law school, Riebman began his legal career as an assistant state’s attorney for the Office of the Cook County State’s Attorney. Three years later, he entered into private practice, where he worked until his appointment to the bench.

His memberships have included the Illinois State Bar Association, the American Bar Association, the Northwest Suburban Bar Association (past president), the Decalogue Society, and the Illinois Judges Association.

He is a recipient of the Distinguished Service Award from Northern Illinois University College of Law (2018).

Riebman and his wife, Robin, raised two children. Their daughter, Ronnie, is a surgical nurse, and their son, Elliott, is an attorney. An avid golfer, he golfed as a member of the U.S. Transplant Olympics in 1992, six months post-kidney transplant surgery. Riebman received a second kidney transplant in 2006.
