Biography

The Hon. Helios Joe Hernandez II (Ret.) was a judge for the Riverside County Superior Court in California. He was appointed to the bench by former Governor Gray Davis in 2001. He filled the vacancy created by the retirement of the Hon. Curtis R. Hinman (Ret.). Hernandez retired from the bench in 2018 and his vacancy was filled by the Hon. Emily A. Benjamini.

Hernandez received his B.A. from Stanford University. He went on to earn his J.D. from the University of Southern California.

Hernandez is a Vietnam veteran. He served as an officer in the U.S. Navy aboard the USS Kittyhawk from 1967 to 1970. His ship was engaged in battle during the Vietnam War in 1969.

Hernandez spent most of his legal career with the Riverside County District Attorney's Office, where he began as a deputy district attorney in 1980. During his tenure there, he would rise to the position of supervising deputy district attorney in 1990, where he was tasked with supervising several divisions which included the Juvenile, Filing, Preliminary Hearings, and Narcotics Prosecution Divisions. He remained with the D.A.'s office until his appointment to the Superior Court in 2001.

He also served briefly as a sole practitioner from 1978 to 1979.

He was a member of the Riverside County Mock Trial Steering Committee.

Hernandez' father, the late Helios Joseph Hernandez, Sr., was a decorated veteran of World War II and the Korean War. As a pilot in the U.S. Air Force, he flew several missions in WWII including the Battle of the Bulge and the Berlin Airlift. During the Korean War, he flew the B-26 fighter-bomber.
