Biography

The Hon. Helen L. Halpert (Ret.) served as a judge for the King County Superior Court in Washington. Halpert was appointed to the bench by former Governor Gary Locke in 1999. She retired on June 30, 2018 and joined JAMS as a private mediator and arbitrator.

Over the course of her judicial career, Halpert held assignments as the Assistant Presiding Judge (2008 to 2010), the Chief Criminal Judge (2007), the Chief Judge of the Juvenile Court (2012 to 2013), and the Lead Dependency Judge (2015 to 2018). She is the editor and author of the Domestic Violence Manual for Judges.

Halpert earned a bachelor’s degree from Occidental College in 1974. She then completed a J.D. at the University of California, Davis School of Law in 1977.

After graduating from law school, Halpert began her legal career as a judicial clerk for the Washington Court of Appeals (Division II). She served in that capacity until 1980, at which time she became an assistant dean for the University of Washington School of Law.

Then, in 1985, Halpert returned to her legal practice, working as a staff attorney for The Defender Association. She worked as a public defender for four years, rising through the ranks to become supervisor of the Appellate Unit before becoming a judge for the Seattle Municipal Court in 1989.

Her memberships have included the Washington State Bar Association, the California State Bar Association, the National Council of Juvenile and Family Court Judges, and the Superior Court Judges Association. She also sat on the Board of Directors of Family Law CASA, the Legislative Sentencing Reform Task Force, and the Becca Task Force.

She was named Judge of the Year by the King County Bar Association (2001) and Washington Women Lawyers (2018).

Halpert resides in Seattle, Washington. She has been actively involved with the First Place School and the Northend Jewish Community Center.
