Biography

The Hon. Gloria Sanchez O’Malley (Ret.) was a judge for the Eighth Judicial District Court in Clark County, Nevada. She was elected to the bench in 1993. She retired at the end of her term in January 2015.


O’Malley received a B.A. in sociology from the University of California, San Diego. She went on to earn a J.D. from the University of Santa Clara School of Law.


Prior to her judgeship, she served as a domestic relations referee, a UIFSA paternity hearing master, and also worked as a private practice attorney.


While on the bench, O’Malley presided in the Family Division, where she holds the distinction of being the first woman to be appointed presiding judge of the Family Court in 1997. She held that position until 1999 and then again in 2009. During her tenure on the Family Court, O’Malley is credited with the creation and implementation of the Night Court and the Family Court’s Self-Help Center. Later, she was instrumental in helping to establish the Family Court Marathon Settlement Conference Program.


She sat on the Board of Directors of Big Brothers and Big Sisters of Southern Nevada, becoming its first female president in 1987.


O’Malley received the Irvin J. Westheimer Award, the Peacemaker of the Year Award (Mediators of Southern Nevada) in 1998, and the Attorney of the Year Award (Equal Rights for Divorced Fathers) in 1988.


Her committee memberships have included the Nevada Network Against Domestic Violence Supreme Court Task Force and the Executive Council of the State Bar Family Law Section.


O’Malley was a member of the State Bar of Nevada and the State Bar of Pennsylvania.
