Biography

The Hon. Gerald Lebovits is an Acting Justice of the New York County Supreme Court, Civil Term in the First Judicial District of New York. He was appointed to the Supreme Court bench in 2015.

Justice Lebovits’ judicial career began in 2001 when he was first appointed to the New York City Housing Court in New York County by the Hon. Jonathan Lippman, former Chief Administrative Judge of the State of New York. He was later reappointed to the Housing Court bench in 2006 by the Hon. Ann Pfau, who was serving as the Chief Administrative Judge at that time. Then, in 2011, Justice Lebovits was elected to serve as a judge for the New York County Civil Court and was promptly appointed to the New York County Criminal Court that same year.

He graduated with his B.A. in law and psychology from Carleton University (Canada) in 1976. Lebovits also earned an LL.L. (J.D. equivalent) from the University of Ottawa Faculty of Law in 1979, an M.C.L. from Tulane University School of Law in 1980, and an LL.M. in criminal justice from New York University School of Law in 1986.

While attending university in Canada, Lebovits worked as a teaching assistant in the Department of Law at Carleton University from 1975 to 1979.

Shortly after graduating from Tulane, he joined the Legal Aid Society in New York City, where he worked as a staff attorney in its Criminal Defense Division beginning in 1982. Lebovits held that position until 1986, at which time, he joined the New York State Unified Court System. During his fifteen-year tenure there, Lebovits worked as a principal court attorney with the New York County Supreme Court. He remained in that capacity until his appointment to the bench in 2001.

In addition to his legal and judicial career, he has worked in academia since 1989. His positions have included teaching as an adjunct professor of law at New York Law School, St.John’s University School of Law, New York University School of Law, Fordham University School of Law, and Columbia Law School.

He is also a prolific writer, contributing to various legal publications including the New York State Bar Journal’s Legal Writer column since 2001.

His memberships have included serving as an officer of the Network of Bar Leaders, special master of the New York State Supreme Court, Civil Term, and master of the American Inns of Court. Lebovits also served as president of the Association of Small Claims Arbitrators of the New York City Civil Court, the Association of Housing Court Judges, the New York City Civil Court Board of Judges, and the New York State Association of Acting Supreme Court Justices.

His committee memberships include serving as secretary of the New York City Bar Association's Civil Court Committee and co-chair of its Committee on Landlord-Tenant Proceedings. He also served as chair of the New York County Lawyers Association’s Law Program at the New York City High School for the Humanities and of the Joint Committee in Fee Disputes and Conciliation for the First Department.

From a civic standpoint, Lebovits has served as a divisional chief referee for the Westside Soccer League in New York City and was a Make-a-Wish Foundation wish granter for terminally ill children from 1996 to 2001.
