Biography

The Hon. George T. Stephenson (Ret.) served as a judge for the 2nd Judicial District Court of Minnesota. He was appointed to the bench by former Governor Jesse Ventura in 2001.

Prior to his appointment, Stephenson was an assistant city attorney for the St. Paul City Attorney’s Office, a position to which he was named in 1998. During his tenure there, he sat as the head of the Criminal Division. Before that, he spent time as an attorney in private practice (1990 to 1998) and as an assistant federal public defender for the Federal Public Defender’s Office (1988 to 1990).

Stephenson earned a bachelor’s degree from St. Mary’s College in 1980. He then completed a J.D. at William Mitchell College of Law in 1985. He was admitted to the State Bar of Minnesota in 1985.

After graduating from law school, Stephenson began his legal career as an investigator for the St. Paul Department of Human Rights. He served in that capacity until 1986, at which time he performed two short stints as an assistant city attorney for the City of St. Paul (1986 to 1987) and an assistant county attorney for the Ramsey County Attorney’s Office (1988).
