Biography

The Hon. Gary L. Bergosh is a judge for the 1st Judicial Circuit Court of Florida. He was elected to the bench in 2006 and subsequently re-elected in 2012 and 2018.

The 1st Judicial Circuit encompasses Escambia, Okaloosa, Santa Rosa, and Walton Counties. Bergosh has held assignments in Escambia County.

Bergosh earned a bachelor’s degree from the University of West Florida in 1989. He then completed a J.D. at the University of Memphis, Cecil C. Humphreys School of Law, in 1992.

After graduating from law school, Bergosh became a judge advocate for the United States Marine Corps. He served in that capacity until 1996, eventually leaving active duty to become assistant general counsel for the United States Department of Defense. During his tenure there, Bergosh continued to serve as a company commander in the United States Marine Corps Reserve, acting as an executive officer of the 4th Assault Amphibian Battalion in Kuwait and Iraq.

His professional memberships have included the American Bar Association, the Federal Bar Association, and the Escambia-Santa Rosa County Bar Association. He has also been a member of the Marine Corps Reserve Association and the Kiwanis Club as well as a cubmaster for the Boy Scouts of America and a chairman of the Escambia County School Board.

He has taught as an associate professor at Embry Riddle Aeronautical University.

Bergosh was born in Ventura, California, and raised in Pensacola, Florida, as his adoptive stepfather was stationed at Naval Air Station Pensacola. He graduated from Pensacola High School in 1985. When not presiding on the bench, Bergosh enjoys running and hiking.
