Biography

The Hon. Fred W. Slaughter is a judge for the United States District Court for the Central District of California. He was nominated to the seat by President Joe Biden on December 15, 2021, and confirmed by the United States Senate on March 17, 2022, filling the vacancy created by the Hon. Andrew J. Guilford, who assumed senior status.


Prior to his appointment, Slaughter presided as a judge of the Orange County Superior Court in California. He was appointed by former Governor Jerry Brown on December 27, 2013, filling a vacancy created by the retirement of Judge Gregory Munoz.


Slaughter attended the University of California, Los Angeles, where he earned a B.A. in business economics. He continued his studies at the University of California, Los Angeles School of Law, eventually earning a J.D.


After graduating from law school, Slaughter began his legal career in 2000. He served as a deputy city attorney with the Criminal Division of the Office of the City Attorney in Los Angeles. Then, in 2002, he began a ten-year tenure as an assistant United States attorney for the Office of the United States Attorney, serving in the District of Arizona (2002 to 2004), the Central District of California (2004 to 2008, 2010 to 2012), and the District of Oregon (2008 to 2010). In 2012, he became the deputy chief of the Santa Ana Branch of the Office of the United States Attorney, a position he held until his appointment to the Superior Court of Orange County.


Slaughter is the son of Fred Slaughter, a famous sports agent and attorney known for representing professional basketball and football players.


He is registered as a Democrat.
