Biography

The Hon. Faith A. J. Maughan is a judge for the 18th Judicial District Court of Kansas. She was appointed to the bench by former Governor Sam Brownback in 2013.


The 18th Judicial District encompasses Sedgwick County.


Prior to her appointment, Maughan was a partner at Maughan & Maughan, a family law and estate planning practice she co-founded alongside her husband. Before that, she spent time as an assistant district attorney with the Reno County District Attorney’s Office. Maughan has supplemented her practice with service as a judge for the City of Colwich.


Maughan earned a bachelor’s degree in psychology from Washburn University in 1993. She spent the next two years working at Menningers before completing a J.D. at Washburn University School of Law in 1998. As a law student, she clerked for Bennett & Dillon (Topeka) and the City of Wichita Prosecutor’s Office.


After graduating from law school, Maughan began her legal career as an assistant city attorney with the City of Wichita Law Department. She served in that capacity for one year, eventually leaving to handle immigration, probate, trusts, criminal, and civil litigation matters as an associate at Smith Shay Farmer & Wetta.


Raised in Peabody, Kansas, Maughan graduated from Peabody High School. She is a lieutenant colonel with the United States Army Reserve Judge Advocate General’s Corps. Maughan and her husband, Carl, have two children. The family attends St. Catherine of Siena Catholic Church. When not presiding over legal proceedings, she volunteers at A Better Choice, a pregnancy crisis center.


Maughan is registered as a Republican. She identifies as a pro-life, constitutional conservative.
