Biography

The Hon. Esther M. Morgenstern is a Justice for the Kings County Supreme Court (Criminal Term) in the Second Judicial District of New York. One year after her election to the bench in 2006, she was assigned to the Integrated Domestic Violence Court.

Morgenstern began her judicial career as a judge for the Civil Court of the City of New York, a position to which she was elected in 1996. Shortly after, she was assigned to the Criminal Court of the City of New York. Then, in 2002, she was designated Acting Justice for the Queens County Supreme Court by Chief Administrative Judge Jonathan Lippman. While presiding in that capacity, she also served as an Acting Justice for the Kings County Family Court (2002 to 2003) and the Integrated Domestic Violence Court of the Queens County Family Court (2004 to 2005).

Prior to her election to the bench, Morgenstern served in the New York State Unified Court System. She entered as a law assistant in 1986, rising through the ranks to become a senior law assistant (1987), associate law assistant (1988), and a principal law clerk (1990).

Before that, she worked as an attorney at Yisraeli and Yerushalmi (1985 to 1986) and as a law assistant at Torras Greenberg (1984 to 1985).

Morgenstern earned a B.A. from Brooklyn College at the City University of New York in 1980. Four years later, she completed a J.D. at Yeshiva University, Benjamin N. Cardozo School of Law.

She has served as president of the Brooklyn Women’s Bar Association, vice-president of the New York City Supreme Court Judges Association, and delegate to the New York State Supreme Court Justices Association. She has also served on the Board of Trustees of the Brooklyn Bar Association and the Board of Directors of the Brooklyn Women’s Bar Association.

Morgenstern is registered as a Republican.
