Biography

The Hon. Ernest M. Caposela is a judge for the Passaic County Superior Court (Vicinage 11) in New Jersey. He was appointed to the bench by former Governor Christine Todd Whitman on June 18, 1999.

Over the course of his judicial career, Caposela held assignments in the Family Division (1999 to 2003, 2003 to 2010) and the Criminal Division (2003 to 2010). He currently sits as the Assignment Judge for the Passaic County Superior Court, a position to which he was selected in 2014.

Caposela earned a bachelor’s degree from Fairleigh Dickinson University (1974) and a master’s degree in public administration from New York University (1977). He spent the next several years working as a legislative consultant for the Council of State Government in New York City before completing a J.D. at the University of Louisville, Louis D. Brandeis School of Law in 1981.

After graduating from law school, Caposela began his legal career as a law clerk for the Passaic County Superior Court. He served in that capacity until 1982, at which time he entered into private practice. Caposela spent the next several years working as a partner at Sala and Caposela (1983 to 1989) and a sole practitioner in his own private practice (1989 to 1999).

Caposela supplemented his practice with service as legal counsel for the City of Passaic Zoning Board, the Paterson Library Board, the Paterson Rent Leveling Board, and the Paterson Restoration Corporation.

His memberships have included the Passaic County Democratic Organization, the American Bar Association, the District of Columbia Bar Association, the New York State Bar Association, the New Jersey State Bar Association, and the Passaic County Bar Association.

Caposela was born and raised in Paterson, New Jersey. He resides in Wayne, New Jersey, with his wife and three children. He identifies as Roman Catholic and enjoys fly fishing.
