Judge Eric E. Butterfield - Professional Background & Legal Expertise

Biography

The Hon. Eric E. Butterfield is a judge for the 20th Judicial District Circuit Court in Oregon. He was appointed to the bench by former Governor Ted Kulongoski in 2010, filling a vacancy created by the retirement of the Hon. Mark Gardner.

The 20th Judicial District encompasses Washington County.

Prior to his appointment, Butterfield was the Chief Attorney for the Metropolitan Public Defender’s Office in Hillsboro, a position to which he was named in 1998. Before that, he spent time as an assistant public defender at the Office of the Federal Public Defender for the District of Guam (1997) and a trial attorney at Baumann & Hull in Guam (1993 to 1996).

Butterfield earned a bachelor’s degree from the University of Washington in 1988. He then completed a J.D. at Willamette University College of Law in 1991.

After graduating from law school, Butterfield entered into private practice, working as an associate at the Law Office of Mark DeLapp.

Raised in Seattle, Washington, Butterfield attended Roosevelt High School. He is a veteran of the United States Marine Corps Reserve, having been deployed to Saudi Arabia and Kuwait during the first Gulf War.
