The Hon. Emily E. Vasquez is a judge for the Sacramento County Superior Court in California. She was appointed to the bench in 2001 by former Governor Gray Davis. At the time of her appointment, Judge Vasquez was the first Latina to serve in Sacramento County.
She was born in Mexico and immigrated to California with her parents as a child. Her parents came to the states to work as farm laborers, and during her childhood, Vasquez would work in the fields with them.
Vasquez attended the University of California, Davis on scholarship, where she graduated with her bachelor's degree in 1974. She went on to earn her J.D. from the University of California, Berkeley Boalt Hall School of Law in 1977.
After graduating from law school, Vasquez joined the California Rural Legal Assistance, where she worked as an attorney for the next four years. She would also work for the California Fair Employment and Housing Commission from 1981 to 1983, and the California Public Relations Board from 1983 to 1985. Vasquez also worked as an assistant public defender for the Sacramento County Public Defender's Office, where she would remain until 1993.
She would then leave the public arena, to join the law firm Kronick, Moskovitz, Tiedemann, and Girard, where she specialized in labor and employment litigation. At the time of her appointment to the bench in 2001, Vasquez was practicing as a partner at the firm.
She received the Humanitarian of the Year Award from the Sacramento Bar Association in 2001.
During her time on the bench, Judge Vasquez has presided over civil and criminal jury trials.
