Judge Edward C. Wright - Professional Background & Legal Expertise

Biography

The Hon. Edward C. Wright is a judge for the Philadelphia County Court of Common Pleas in Pennsylvania. He was elected to the bench in 2011.

Wright earned a B.A. in philosophy from Temple University in 1987. He spent the next several years working in the Data Processing Unit of the Court of Common Pleas and the Products Liability Department of Margolis Edelstein before completing a J.D. at the University of Maryland Francis King Carey School of Law in 1990.

After graduating from law school, Wright entered into private practice. He worked as an associate at O’Brien & O’Brien & Associates. The following year, he joined the Civil (Asbestos Division) of the Court of Common Pleas, where he served as a judicial law clerk for the Hon. Charles Wright before becoming a judicial law clerk for the Hon. Doris A. Smith of the Commonwealth Court of Pennsylvania (1993) and the Hon. Robert N.C. Nix, Jr. of the Supreme Court of Pennsylvania (1995).

Wright returned to private practice in 1995. He began working as a partner at Wright & Padilla, where he specialized in personal injury, medical malpractice, products liability, bankruptcy, small business counseling, and criminal matters. Then, in 2001, he was selected to serve as a deputy attorney general in the Civil Litigation Division of the Pennsylvania Office of Attorney General.

In 2003, Wright opened his own private practice as a sole practitioner. He held this position until his election to the bench, briefly leaving his practice to work as the Chief of Staff for Carol Ann Campbell of the Philadelphia City Council (2006 to 2008) as well as the judicial law clerk for the Hon. Nina Wright Padilla of the Court of Common Pleas (2008 to 2010).

His memberships have included the Philadelphia Bar Association, the Pennsylvania Bar Association, and the Barristers’ Association of Philadelphia. He sat on the Civil Rules Committee of the Philadelphia Municipal Court and the Christian Street YMCA Board, and he has volunteered for the Consumer Bankruptcy Assistance Project, the National Foundation for Teaching Young Entrepreneurs, and the Philadelphia Bar Association YLD Mentoring Program.
