Biography

The Hon. Diane C. Freniere is an associate justice for the Superior Court of Massachusetts. She was appointed to the bench by Governor Charlie Baker on June 7, 2017.

During her judicial tenure, Freniere has held assignments in Plymouth, Middlesex, Suffolk, Norfolk, and Worcester Counties.

She earned a bachelor’s degree in manufacturing engineering from Boston University in 1985. Freniere spent the next several years as an Officer in the United States Air Force, holding assignments at the AFPRO Hughes Aircraft Company and the Edwards Air Force Base. She then completed a J.D. at Boston College Law School in 1991. As a law student, she sat as the Articles Editor for the Boston College Environmental Affairs Law Review.

After graduating from law school, Freniere entered into private practice as an intellectual property litigation associate at Hale & Dorr. She worked in this capacity until 1994, at which time she joined the Office of the United States Attorney for the District of Massachusetts. As an Assistant United States Attorney, Freniere held assignments in the Economic Crime Unit and the Health Care Fraud Unit, prosecuting a wide variety of white-collar crimes. She also sat as Chief of the Economic Crime Unit and Chief of the White Collar Crime Section, and she served as a Victim-Witness Legal Advisor.

Then, in 2014, Freniere left her post at the United States Attorney’s Office and returned to private practice. She became of counsel for Mark Zusman Freniere Compton, representing clients in complex business litigation until her appointment to the bench.

Her memberships have included the Boston Bar Association, the Massachusetts Bar Association, and the American Bar Association. She has also been involved with the National Charity League, The Wellesley Club, and the Family Liturgy Committee of St. Paul Church.

Freniere was born in Natick, Massachusetts. She was a resident of Wellesley at the time of her appointment.
