Biography

The Hon. Deborah Hernandez Mitchell is a judge for the 18th Judicial District Court of Kansas. She was appointed to the bench by former Governor Sam Brownback on July 6, 2015, filling a vacancy created by the retirement of the Hon. Joseph Bribiesca.

The 18th Judicial District encompasses Sedgwick County.

Prior to her appointment, Mitchell was a partner at Woodard, Hernandez, Roth & Day, a law firm she joined in 2003. During her tenure there, she represented both plaintiffs and defendants in general litigation matters. She also handled medical malpractice defense and workers compensation cases.

Mitchell earned a bachelor’s degree in economics and a master’s degree in business administration from the University of Kansas. She then completed a J.D. at the University of Kansas School of Law.

After graduating from law school, Mitchell began her legal career as an assistant district attorney with the Sedgwick County District Attorney’s Office. She served in that capacity for three years, eventually leaving to handle contract, employment, business organization, real estate, and franchise matters as in-house counsel for Triad Associates.

She is registered as a Republican.
