Judge Danya A. Dayson - Professional Background & Legal Expertise

Biography

The Hon. Danya A. Dayson is an associate judge for the Superior Court of the District of Columbia. She was nominated by former President Barack Obama on July 11, 2011. Dayson was confirmed by the United States Senate on November 5, 2011.

Prior to her nomination, she handled a criminal practice and was head of the domestic relations practice at O’Toole, Rothwell, Nassau & Steinbach since 2003. Dayson also taught as an adjunct professor at the George Washington School of Law.

Before joining the firm, she was a partner at Wicks & Dayson. Her areas of practice there included criminal and family law matters, and she served as a court-appointed Guardian ad Litem. Dayson began her legal career in solo practice before beginning a judicial clerkship for the Hon. Robert E. Morin with the Superior Court of the District of Columbia in 2000.

She received a B.A. in political science and Russian/Eastern European studies from Appalachian State University. Dayson then completed a J.D. at Georgetown Law School in 1998.

She sat as a member of the Domestic Relations and Paternity Support Subcommittee of the Family Court Implementation Committee, the Steering Committee of the Family Law Section of the District of Columbia Bar, the Superior Court Family Court Training Committee (co-chair), the Superior Court Family Guide to the District of Columbia Juvenile Justice System Drafting Work Group (chair), the Superior Court Family Court Rules Advisory Committee, the Superior Court Family Court Implementation Committee, and the Strategic Planning Leadership Council.

Dayson was born in New York City and raised in Chapel Hill, North Carolina. She is a married mother of one child.
