Biography

The Hon. David R. Fenster is a judge for the Vermont Superior Court. He was appointed to the bench by former Governor Peter Shumlin in December 2016.

Fenster has held assignments in the Civil, Criminal, and Family Divisions in Addison County.

Prior to his appointment, he acted as the State’s Attorney for Addison County since 2008. Before becoming the county's lead prosecutor, Fenster worked as a private practice attorney at Barr, Sternberg, Moss, Lawrence, Silver, Saltonstall & Fenster and was a deputy state’s attorney in Bennington County (1993 to 2005).

He received a bachelor’s degree from the University of Vermont. Fenster then completed a J.D. at Yeshiva University, Benjamin N. Cardozo School of Law.

He is a past chair of the Executive Committee of the Department of State’s Attorneys and is a Fellow of the American College of Trial Lawyers. Fenster also served as president of the Vermont Bar Association and sits as a member of the Criminal Division Oversight Committee.

He and his wife, Katree, have two children. At the time of his appointment, the family resided in Middlebury, Vermont.
