Biography

The Hon. Daniel P. Richardson is a judge for the Vermont Superior Court. He was appointed to the bench by Governor Phil Scott on April 26, 2022.

Over the course of his judicial career, Richardson has presided over civil cases in Lamoille, Essex, and Orleans Counties.

Prior to his appointment, Richardson was City Attorney and Corporate Counsel for the City of Burlington. Before that, he spent sixteen years as a partner at Tarrant, Gillies & Shems in Montpelier, where he represented individuals, businesses, and municipalities.

Richardson earned a bachelor’s degree in philosophy, English literature, and writing from Ohio Wesleyan University. He then completed a J.D. at Vermont Law School. As a law student, he sat as the editor-in-chief of the Vermont Law Review.

After graduating from law school, Richardson began his legal career as a judicial law clerk to the Hon. Matthew I. Katz, the Hon. Richard Norton, and the Hon. Geoffrey Crawford of the Chittenden County Superior Court.

His memberships have included the Vermont Bar Foundation, the Access to Justice Coalition, the Vermont Bar Association, and the Montpelier Development Review Board. He also served as Ward 3 City Councilor for the City of Montpelier.

Raised in Canton, Ohio, Richardson was a resident of Burlington, Vermont, at the time of his appointment. He and his wife, Britt, have two children.
