Biography

The Hon. D. Gary Steiner (Ret.) was a judge for the Pierce County Superior Court in Washington. He was appointed to the bench by former Governor John Spellman in 1981. Steiner retired in 2011.

During his tenure on the bench, he is credited with co-founding the Pierce County Drug Court (1994), which was later awarded the Outstanding Achievement by a Public Official Award from the Washington Council on Crime and Delinquency in 1996. He was also instrumental in helping to establish a Felony Veteran’s Court in Pierce County in 2009. In addition, Steiner served as the presiding judge of the Superior Court.

He received a B.A. in business from the University of Washington in 1960. Steiner then completed a J.D. at Gonzaga University School of Law in 1964.

After law school, he briefly entered into private practice before joining the United States Army in 1965. During his military service, he fought for two years in Vietnam before ultimately returning to Washington and his private practice work.

In 1970, Steiner was elected to serve as a part-judge for the Eatonville Municipal Court and the Pierce County District Court. In addition to these positions, he continued in his private practice work and also served as an assistant city attorney in Puyallup and as a pro tem commissioner for the Pierce County Superior Court.

Steiner served on the Board of Trustees of the Tacoma-Pierce County Bar Association and the Board of Directors of the Pierce County YMCA. He also served as chairman of the Puyallup United Way Drive and was a past president of his local Kiwanis.

His other memberships included the American Legion, the Veterans of Foreign Wars, and a founding member of the Puget Sound Chapter of the American Inn of Court.

Steiner received the Outstanding Judge Award from the Washington State Bar Association (2006), the Marilyn Holzman Humanitarian Award from the Tacoma-Pierce County Bar Association (2002), and the William O. Douglas Award from the Washington State Trial Lawyers.

He was born in Spokane, Washington.
