Biography

The Hon. D. Anthony Wheeldin is a commissioner for the Sonoma County Superior Court in California. He was appointed to the bench in 2011, becoming the second black jurist to sit on the Sonoma County Superior Court.

Wheeldin earned a J.D. from the University of California, Los Angeles School of Law in 1978.

After graduating from law school, Wheeldin began his legal career as a staff attorney for the United States Department of Housing and Urban Development. He then entered into private practice, handling criminal, family, and housing law matters.

His memberships have included 100 Black Men of Sonoma County. He has also taught Civil Procedure at Empire College School of Law.

Wheeldin was raised in the throes of the civil rights movement. In the 1940s, his parents traveled to Mexico to be married, as California still banned interracial marriages at the time. His father, a member of the Communist Party, had been jailed for his political commitments. He later worked as a journalist for the Los Angeles Daily Journal.
